BACKYARD ICE RINK
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
Determine the area best suited for the rink. Choose an area that is as level as
possible. NOTE: The rink is designed for use with 2"x10" sidewall boards that allow
for approximately 5" of terrain variance. Ensure your area does not have a greater
slope than this. Due to the liner size (20'x40'), the final rink size is 17 ½' x 37 ½'.
Position your first rounded corner. Hammer the stakes into the ground using a
mallet or hammer. Fasten a stake at each of the two outside edges of the rounded
corner using (3) 2½" screws for each stake (fig. 1). NOTE: It’s good practice to
pre-drill holes when driving screws into wood, especially when the screws are
within 2" of the end of the board.

Step 4
Drive a screw halfway into the pre-drilled screw hole found at the top center of the
rounded corner. This will be a temporary screw used to create 90-degree angles and
guidelines when building your ends and sides. Tie a string to this screw, running
it out past the (20') rink width (fig. 2). Attach the end of the string to a stake and
secure into the ground making the string as tight as possible. This will create a width
guideline to follow when installing the endwall boards.
Tools and items needed
• Cordless drill
• Large hammer or
sledge hammer
• String
• Tape measure
• Staple gun (optional)
• Drill bits
• Safety glasses
• Work gloves
• 8 - 2"x10"x8' pieces of
pressure-treated lumber
Attach the first 2"x10"x8' endwall board to the inside of the rounded corner using
(4) 2 ½" screws (fig. 3). Continue to add the second 2"x10"x8' endwall board. At
the midpoint of the endwall boards, a stake must be driven approximately 13" into
the ground using a large hammer. Use (3) 2 ½" screws for each board, attaching
it to the stake as shown in figure 4. Drive the screws from the inside of the rink,
through the endwall boards and into the stake. NOTE: The stakes act as the con-
nector between two sidewall boards as you build the full length of each sidewall.
Stakes extending above the endwalls and sidewalls can create a tripping hazard
and should be avoided.
